Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University Launch NILab to Drive AI-Powered Bioscience for Health

Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and Ulster University (UU) are proud to announce the launch of NILab, an ambitious Northern Ireland Landscape partnership in AI for Bioscience. Supported by a significant BBSRC award, NILab aims to make a significant stride in the global landscape of AI-powered bioscience discovery, driving breakthroughs that revolutionise our understanding of health, nutrition, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), through training the next generation of AI-powered bioscientists to address grand challenges through cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

NILab will establish a unique doctoral training programme to equip 60 PhD students from diverse backgrounds with expertise in both AI and biosciences. The programme will focus on “Discovery AI,” an innovative discovery framework that includes AI-based causality identification, hypothesis generation, and signature discovery. With a commitment to One Health, NILab will drive AI-powered research at the interface of human health and animal well-being, in alignment with BBSRC’s strategic priorities.
